MONTAGE: THE SECRET LANGUAGE OF CINEMA with Miguel Mira.
Montage: the secret language of cinema. Present in films since 1899, it is older than sound, color and even camera movement. Today, it is almost omnipresent, be it in Netflix series, Hollywood and Bollywood films, and even the stories and posts on our social media. This workshop invites film practitioners to uncover this discrete film language by attending two great moments.
In the first stage of the workshop we will discuss the differences between editing and montage, their history and theory. In the second stage, instructions are provided on how to optimally create your own montage, via a simple exercise that invites participants to create their own music video.
The workshop will provide the software and footage, but participants are also invited to bring their own material.
Participants will leave the workshop, with their first music video crafted and 101 knowledge regarding this mysterious yet marvelous film language, so that in the future they may assemble their own films.
MIGUEL MIRA holds a degree in Computer Animation from Full Sail University. He was an intern at Take It Ease Films and worked as a video editor in Amsterdam. He's a PhD student in Film Studies at University of Coimbra.
Miguel Mira is a digital artist, researcher and lecturer. As a digital artist he creates pieces by testing the limits of software to investigate our contemporary digital age. As a researcher his interest lies at the intersection of different mediums. Namely: film, VR and the digital revolution. As an educator he is a frequent guest lecturer at the University of Lisbon and has taught workshops at multiple institutes. Currently, he is a PhD candidate in both Coimbra University and Leiden University in Art and Media studies. His PhD research focuses on investigating VR in comparison to cinema from an ontological, cognitive, historical and narrative perspective.
