The birth of a black hole sounds like a bird's chirp
The picture of a giant hole, a vertiginous abyss into which ideas, projects, and visions fall; a vacuous space, with no air; a space between, the interregnum of political and historical becoming; a camera obscura wherein lies the paradox between denial and transformation. But also a black hole that not only swallows matter into the core of its unfathomable darkness, but might also continue to spit out particles of energy into space.
HOLE 2.0
is the theme of UMA’s first annual season, in 2021. We propose to look back on 2020 through a fictional narrative of the year that never happened.
2020 was a year of seismic change and, simultaneously, its own denial. If, on the one hand, the end of the world felt disturbingly real, on the other, new social and political movements proposed paradigmatic changes, allowing us to envision alternative futures.
2020 was also the year in which the machina mundi slowed down while we all got to attest to the political, economic, and environmental instability that had been looming for over a decade. It was the year in which we faced, yet again, our frail physiology while adapting our bodies and minds to the inevitably faster digital remediation of reality.
Inspired by astrophysics theories that understand the black hole as a site of possibility and inception of new universes, in 2021 UMA and its collaborators will dive deep into this HOLE 2.0, into this year which, despite not happening, generated a whole constellation of epiphenomena, narratives, movements, and discourses.
Through a transdisciplinary program and in collaboration with artists and thinkers from diverse areas, we will parse out, tear apart, and delve into this dramaturgical problem from different points of view, in an intensive and disheveled digging for meaning, in the act of staying with/in the hole, to paraphrase Donna Haraway.
